Frankenstein, ou le Prométhée moderne Volume 1 (of 3) by Shelley
The Story
Young Victor Frankenstein is obsessed with uncovering the secret of life. After years of study, he succeeds in a dark attic lab, stitching together a new being from parts of the dead. But his triumph instantly turns to terror. The creature is huge, intelligent, and painfully aware of its own ugliness. Horrified by what he's made, Victor abandons it. We then follow the creature's lonely journey through a world that hates him on sight. He learns to speak and read, but his longing for companionship only brings him more pain. This first volume sets up the tragic conflict between a creator who refuses responsibility and a creation desperate for love.
Why You Should Read It
This book blew my mind. Forget the lumbering monster of pop culture. Shelley's creature is articulate, emotional, and deeply wronged. The real monster here might be Victor, whose pride and fear lead to disaster. Written by an 18-year-old Mary Shelley, the story asks questions we're still wrestling with today: What are the limits of science? What do we owe the things we create? It’s a gothic masterpiece that’s surprisingly fast-paced and emotionally raw.
Final Verdict
Perfect for anyone who loves a story that sticks with you long after you finish it. If you enjoy gothic atmosphere, moral dilemmas, and characters you can't easily label 'good' or 'evil,' this is your book. It's a must-read for sci-fi and horror fans who want to visit the source. A classic that truly earns its reputation.
